 Specialization: Chemical Engineering

          PhD study in chemical engineering is an important discipline in this scientific department. It was opened in the academic year 1987-1988, then it was discontinued in 2006-2007 and reopened again in the academic year 2015-2016.

          Doctoral study aims to graduate the specialists in all fields of chemical engineering and to be qualified to work as university lecturers in the institutions of the Ministry of Higher Education and other research centers in Iraqi ministries, as well as in the industrial sectors and the oil and gas industry.

          The student in the first preparatory year studies advanced scientific topics in chemical engineering such as advanced heat transfer, advanced mass transfer, advanced fluid flow, advanced thermodynamics, advanced reactor design, advanced oil refining engineering, in addition to an optional course that the student chooses as desired from a set of options determined by the scientific department, as well as the student studies the English language, relying on international sources, in order to raise the student’s skill in the English language and prepare him/her to write doctoral thesis efficiently.

After the student passes the first preparatory year, the student selects the research for his/her project from a group of research presented by the department’s professors in all chemical engineering specialties, and he/she is required to pass the comprehensive written exam whose scientific subjects are determined by a quinquennial committee formed from professors in the specialization of the project that was chosen by the student. Members of this committee are from inside and outside the university; the examination includes basic and secondary scientific subjects in addition to a presentation (comprehensive oral exam) that the student makes in front of the members of the quinquennial committee.

Once passing the comprehensive exams, the student begins work in the completion of his/her research project in the department’s laboratories or other research centers inside and/or outside the university under the supervision of one of the senior lecturers in the scientific department and the period of research completion is two years.

MSc Studies

Specialist: Chemical engineering and oil refinery.

 

This specialist considered as one of the important scientific branches in industry, especially in the gas-oil refinery sector, as it has an important role in the energy production field required by the whole world recently. The international energy demands require more need for the crude oil and petrochemical products, besides the developments achieved by producing and using the eco-friendly materials and reduce the pollution generated from the waste accompanied with the refinery processes of the oil and gas.

The graduate students study in the first year many courses related to the chemical engineering specialist, like Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Fluid Flow, Thermodynamics, and modeling. There would be also a core courses related into the oil-gas refinery besides an elective course that would be chosen by the student. Also, English language course will be taught based on international curricula that would be helpful to improve the students’ language skills and help writing the thesis successfully.

In the second year of graduate studies, the student will select a research topic for graduation thesis. The research topic will be selected among several topics presented by the department faculty members. All topics are related to the chemical engineering and the department will provide all logistic support i.e. instruments, equipment, and scientific references.

Specialization: Chemical Process Engineering


The specialization of chemical process engineering is considered one of the important specialties in the industry because it contributes to preparing engineers with higher degrees (i.e., master’s degree) in all industrial fields. The graduates from this major will be qualified to supervise factories and plants in the private and public sectors. Not only this, but they will also set up the production plans and design the equipment that involves developing and enhancing the quantity and quality of the product.
In the first year of master’s study, the student will study chemical engineering subjects such as fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, thermodynamics, reactor design, and chemical processes modeling. Inaadtion to these subjects, the master student can also study optional subjects. The department determines these optional subjects. Moreover, the student takes the English language class, which will improve her/his scientific writing ability, such as writing a thesis or scientific articles.
In the second year of master’s study, the student will choose the topic of her/his research among the topics introduced by the department’s faculty members. The department provides all the capabilities to conduct student research, such as the experimental setups and materials and the most recent references.

The chemical engineering and environment pollution branch is considered one of the rare scientific branches in the country’s universities and provides the country with engineers specialized in designing equipment dealing with treating petroleum pollutants in addition to their general specialization in chemical engineering sciences. This branch was established in 2015 to meet the need of market to engineers specialized in the field of treatment of the oil and industrial pollution and protection of the environment. 

 The Chemical Engineering Department, since it’s established, has been providing the oil and industrial sectors with chemical engineers graduating from the oil Refining and chemical process branches. However, the great expansion in the oil and industrial sectors has led to necessity to establish a branch dealing with oil and industrial pollutants by preparing designs and integrated systems including plans, programs and research projects in addition to activation of cooperation with oil and industrial institutions.

The graduates of this branch will work to meet the needs of the various oil and industrial sectors, especially in oil refining units and industrial processes, and develop green technology field via solving various environmental problems and developing means of treatment for modern engineering techniques.

The branch emphasizes the practical side in addition to the theoretical side through the presence of specialized laboratories and curricula.
